Deploying Toughbooks to a Fleet

Pennsylvania State Police outfits its cruisers with rugged notebooks.

For any public-safety organization, technology rollouts hinge on reducing downtime. The Pennsylvania State Police deployed 1,400 Panasonic Toughbooks to its statewide fleet in six months and managed to keep the install to four hours per vehicle.

One hint: high-tech tents enabled workers to perform the rollouts in stations across the state regardless of the weather.

The key to the operation was ample planning. “The planning that went into this was probably a year in the making,” says Lt. M. Williams. Another success factor was to keep the communication flowing with the field staff.
