Oregon Governor Kate Brown Honored by NASCIO for Outstanding IT Contributions
At the NASCIO 2018 Midyear Conference in Baltimore, Md., on April 23, the National Association of State CIO's announced Oregon Governor Kate Brown as the 2018 winner of the NASCIO Technology Champion Award. The award seeks to honor "outstanding individual contributions in the field of information technology in the public sector," according to an emailed statement from NASCIO.
Brown fits the bill for her efforts to strengthen Oregon's cybersecurity posture by opening a Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, which brings together both public- and private-sector experts with the aim to better protect citizen data. NASCIO also acknowledged her efforts in championing the use of data throughout the state by establishing an Open Data standard and appointing a chief data officer.
"NASCIO and its members applaud Governor Brown's leadership around cybersecurity, broadband, managing data as a strategic asset and modernizing IT procurement," Bo Reese, Oklahoma CIO and NASCIO president, said in the emailed statement. "The benefits of these contributions extend outside Oregon's borders, serving as examples nation-wide and demonstrating the transformative role IT can have in state government."
