Product Review: ASUS Transformer Book T300 Works Like a Desktop

The detachable keyboard quickly transforms this tablet into a full-size notebook.

IT managers and users alike have been searching for a device that not only functions as a notebook and tablet, but also replaces a high-end desktop. The shape-shifting ASUS Transformer Book T300 convertible notebook can fill that need for many

While the brushed aluminum finish looks great, it also contributes to the durability of the mobile device. The tablet and the keyboard base both feel solid, as does the docking connection.

The keyboard base has a large multigesture touchpad that provides ample mouse control and other touch-screen features. Users will appreciate the raised keys on the full-size keyboard.

ASUS sacrifices some mobility with the device. It weighs a little over 3.5 pounds, and users may have trouble holding the tablet in one hand. But in return, the Transformer Book delivers a full-size notebook with a high-resolution screen.

The manufacturer touts battery life of up to eight hours on a full charge. Tests showed the Transformer Book battery ran for five hours under constant video playback and nearly seven and a half hours during business productivity tasks. Curiously, the keyboard doesn't add battery capacity and, instead, requires charging through an included microUSB cable. The charge on the dock lasts several days, but it should be switched off when not in use.
